Esta imagen es la escala de la devastación provocada por un terremoto de 6.1 grados en el pintoresco pueblo de Amatrice, en el centro de Italia.

Sergio Pirozzi, el edil de Amatrice  dice que éste ya no existe, que fue barrido por el terremoto que comenzó a las 3.36 de la mañana, tiempo de Italia, y que al momento ha cobrado la vida de 73 personas, mientras cuerpos de rescate y voluntarios tratan de localizar a cientos otros que se encuentran bajo los escombros de los edificios derrumbados.

El pueblo se construyó en la edad media en torno a palazzos e iglesias que datan de los años 1500 y posteriores, y que fueron prácticamente demolidas por este trágico evento.

Este mapa muestra el epicentro del terremoto, que se sintió hasta Roma, donde no ocasionó daños.

Los servicios de protección de Amatrice necesitan desesperadamente equipo manual para remover escombros: palas, cortadoras de metal, etc., porque se teme que más de 500 personas pueden estar enterradas.   Matteo Renzi, el Primero Ministro de Italia twitteó que la ayuda va en camino.

El Servicio Geológico de Italia catalogó el terremoto de 6.0 grados en la escala Richter. El Servicio Geológico de Estados Unidos, en 6.2, con epicentro en  Norcia, 170 kilómetros al noreste de Roma.

En el año 2009 un terremoto de 6.3 en la misma región conocida como L’Aquila mató por lo menos a 300 personas.  En 1997 otro terremoto en el área golpeó la ciudad de Asisi, y dañó una de las artísticas del país, la Catedral de San Francisco de Asís, decorado con frescos del artísta del renacimiento Giotto.

No se ha reportado que frailes que habitaban los templos en Amatrice hayan resultado lesionados.
