Sergio Pirozzi, el edil de Amatrice聽 dice que 茅ste ya no existe, que fue barrido por el terremoto que comenz贸 a las 3.36 de la ma帽ana, tiempo de Italia, y que al momento ha cobrado la vida de 73 personas, mientras cuerpos de rescate y voluntarios tratan de localizar a cientos otros que se encuentran bajo los escombros de los edificios derrumbados.

El Servicio Geol贸gico de Italia catalog贸 el terremoto de 6.0 grados en la escala Richter. El Servicio Geol贸gico de Estados Unidos, en 6.2, con epicentro en聽 Norcia, 170 kil贸metros al noreste de Roma.

En el a帽o 2009 un terremoto de 6.3 en la misma regi贸n conocida como L’Aquila mat贸 por lo menos a 300 personas.聽 En 1997 otro terremoto en el 谩rea golpe贸 la ciudad de Asisi, y da帽贸 una de las art铆sticas del pa铆s, la Catedral de San Francisco de As铆s, decorado con frescos del art铆sta del renacimiento Giotto.

No se ha reportado que frailes que habitaban los templos en Amatrice hayan resultado lesionados.
